Gear, Runes & Buff Stacking

Enhancement math, Special Talent procs, the worked archer set, rune rarity caps, and why depth beats breadth.

The Codex

The equipment system in one pass

[M] Confirmed

Commander gear is forged in the Blacksmith from four materials (Ebony, Iron Ore, Leather, Animal Bone) plus blueprints from Expedition, events, the tavern key chest, VIP shop, and Ark of Osiris. Six main slots — weapon, helmet, chest, gloves, legs, boots — plus accessories that stack independently on top of the set.

  • Set bonuses: Windswept and Vanguard (cavalry speed/stats), the four-piece Archer set (skill damage), Eternal Knight (garrison health), Revival (defensive), and the Reaper’s gathering set (+10% speed at two pieces, +20% load at four — capped at epic quality, so fully achievable F2P).
  • Accessories worth knowing: Horn of Fury (rage → more casts), Ring of Doom (normal-attack proc), Pendant of Eternal Night (skill-damage multiplier for Zhuge Liang / YSG / Hermann), Scolas’ Lucky Coin (absorb shield, garrison), Vengeance (counterattack), Pride of the Khan (cavalry).

Enhancement ×1.30 and the Special Talent lottery

[M] Confirmed
S_enhanced = S_printed × 1.30
Worn by a commander with the matching red talent specialization, a piece’s attributes rise 30%
[M] Confirmed

A gear piece printing +3% attack contributes 3% × 1.30 = 3.9% ≈ 4% on the right commander — match the enhancement to the commander’s role. Separately, forging can randomly produce a Special Talent version of a piece worth a large additional bonus — up to +25% attack on certain weapons. The proc only exists if the random forge lands it, which is why high-spenders re-forge key weapons until it does before finalising.

a_proc ≤ 0.25 (weapon-dependent, random on forge)
The proc enters the attack sum like any other source

This loadout’s contribution BEFORE tech, talents, commander, titles, VIP and runes stack on top.
[P] Paper model

Chain it end to end: the +46% rides inside a total attack stack of +110% (effective attack 210,000 on a 100,000 base), the +24% multiplies the active-skill lane, and a 20% Philip II shred cuts the defender from 160,000 to 128,000. The three effects compound rather than add — a complete set, a Special-Talent weapon, and one debuffer together swing far more than the +46% alone suggests.

Runes: one slot, five rarities

[M] Confirmed

Runes drop from Guardians at Holy Sites and grant a temporary single-slot buff — building, research, training, gathering, AP recovery, experience, damage, defence, or healing. Only one rune is active at a time, and no rune functions inside Ark of Osiris. The higher the guardian and the more central the holy site, the better the rune; KvK-map runes are almost all top-tier.

Orange20%
Because only one rune is active, rune choice is a category-level decision, not a stack.

Use the right rune first

Grab a research/building rune BEFORE starting a big upgrade, a damage/defence rune before a fight, an AP-recovery rune before a barbarian push. A 20% Orange research rune held through a Combat Tactics release is worth weeks.

Grabbing them: guardians cost no Action Points and can be tagged by all five of your marches at once — the ×5 credit trick during guardian-kill events. Keep a fast T1 cavalry march (Cao Cao / Belisarius / Lancelot) to reach and hold the node; guardians respawn roughly 00:08–00:15 and 12:08–12:15 UTC.

Depth beats breadth — the investment curve

[P] Paper model

Nominal power scales linearly with marches and their completion, but EFFECTIVE power is superlinear in per-march completion, because the four subsystems inside one march — skills, talents, gear, expertise — interact multiplicatively:

P_eff ∝ Π (skills × talents × gear × expertise) per march

Gold Heads as capital

Treat universal Legendary sculptures like scarce investment capital: concentrate them in one appreciating, version-resistant cornerstone and finish it — skills 5/5/5/5, expertise, talents, gear — before diversifying. Most new-player mistakes are violations of “finish one thing completely before starting the next.”
